Sole Morta

By Lisa Selvaggio

Listening to the wind
Like waves through the trees
The only truth:
The storm is coming
Always drawing near
Just when that sun goes down
Just when that sun decides to never return
Because we've burned her away

We watched her last descent into the horizon
Expecting her the following morn
But she did return no more

Liars are all that's to blame
Cheaters prepare the storm
Their selfish ways
Disregarding the home
The Earth left in shambles
The family ripped from the Mother
The young not yet weaned
Struggling to survive
But the sun no longer has the strength to care
And so she leaves
Drops down into that horizon
Like an eye watching for the last time
As it waves goodbye

So all that's left is the wind
Whispering through the leaves
The branches sway
Waiting for the return of day
But the clouds linger in
Ever so nonchalantly
To cover the sky
The colors left behind
She slunk into the line
Where the water touches the expanse of air
And there was something so sullen about her
You could tell her sadness from light years away
The feelings of being left behind
Ignored and forsaken

And everyone who says they saw
The death of the sun
Could no longer smile
And withered away

Without the warmth or light to guide them
Their eyes forgot how to see
Their hands froze
And silence filled the air
Because even the birds refused to take flight

We have lied to the Mother
Time and again
We have hurt the Mother
Time and again
And the days are numbered for forgiveness
When repentance will no longer count

And a life of power will amount to nothing
Just empty hands grasping for the last shred of life
The day the Earth decides that its orbit is useless
So it stands forever still
Without its Sun to hold it spinning
Gravity's release
As we float into the atmosphere
And lose it all behind
