With regards to the line you quoted: I was mainly referring to feeding carnivores the food they need to survive, especially if these animals are going to be released back into the wild, or even domesticated cats, who some vegans try to convert to a vegan diet unsuccessfully. With regards to a sanctuary environment, if the animal (the rabbit, chicken, etc.) is killed first by the humans or by their natural predator (in this case, let's use an example of a big cat), which is worse? In my opinion, they're equally hard to deal with, especially because you're putting the prey into an enclosure that will ensure its death, which means the human had a hand in it either way.

Do you have links to the videos of BCR staff torturing rabbits? I have only seen one photo of them holding up dead rabbits, their faces smiling, and I agree it was unnecessary and disturbing.

I'm not defending BCR; I have read about Baskin's past, but have not seen all the evidence proving that these actions are going on, namely the videos you mention.

Your article is very well written however, thank you for posting it.
Speaking with wildlife rehab experience, Please note : Despite Carole Baskin's Claims of being an Expert - No captive wild animal needs fed live food, it is a choice and a poor unethical barbaric one if made and the complaints have nothing to do with being a Vegan or an animal rights person.

I believe Carole Baskin at Big Cat Rescue is a psychopath, she intentionally tortures and kills live domestic animals in the name of a "Sanctuary", she and her staff proudly post photos and videos of this torture and killing on the internet. There is nothing honorable in this barbaric unnecessary practice, nor is it needed as well as their continued mocking and making fun of killing domestic rabbits. This story originated regarding 3 bobcats she illegally brought to Florida from the State of Alabama, beside all the domestic rabbits and rats she unnecessarily killed, the bobcats are all dead too, as well as many other big cats living at this facility.

The Rabbit Lovers have united with the Big Cat Lovers to expose BCR. This facility needs shut down for many reasons including animal cruelty and defrauding the public to ensure donations with fabricated stories of rescue and also for dead animals.

I believe that if a person can give proper care, food and housing for an animal like a zoo can I don't have a problem with that. If they cannot, they shouldn't have them. But I think banning them so people cannot own them is wrong. That would only stop people who could properly look after them and benefit the owner and animal from owning them. Even if the were banned irresponsible owners would buy them illegally on the black market to subsidies their ego because they think it makes them cool because they have a cheetah or what not. Just like guns, banning them only puts them in the hands of those not responsible.

You make so much sense! In addition to growing tired of reading the FB newsfeed, I am burnt out from signing (and signing, and signing) all the internet petitions! Like Mr. jumbo global earth destroyer gives a hoot what a petition says.

One of the most heartbreaking animal welfare civil wars is between all of the orangutan advocates. If the groups could spend half as much time fighting palm oil plantations and illegal logging as they do fighting each other, we might save an acre or two of rainforest in Borneo.

Like you, I don't have the answer. But I love the way you framed the problem. Keep it up!

First off, I want to say thanks for taking the time to read this blog and for commenting - it hardly ever happens, so when it does, especially from someone like you, it's great! :)

Thank you, too, for the words of advice, as they really hit me. I know I need to forge my own way, but, like you said, I have to remain fearless and confident enough to face the uncertainty and the things that I'm afraid of - that's the hardest challenge...never mind this economy!

I totally agree with what you're saying when you wrote: "You can keep doing what you're doing now, remain open to change, and see what life brings you. But sometimes being open isn't enough. What if life brings you nothing?"

I often feel alone in the position I'm in, kind of wishing for someone to just come take me under their wing and guide me, but that doesn't really happen...everyone's out for themselves and you have to figure things out on your own. But that's why your comment, your taking the time to share your input with me, means more than you know, and I thank you again!

Don't fret. It seems to me in your twenties is precisely when people SHOULD feel lost.

Your belief system has solidified, you're at your peak physically and creatively, and the horizon is but a distant abstraction. The possibilities are so limitless it's paralyzing. And you're wide awake in a rapacious system populated by zombies.

The idea of earning your necessary living doing something you hate is nauseating. You're justifiably afraid that getting paid to do what you love will taint, even subvert it.

To top it off, you have multiple skill sets. You're a generalist in a world enamored of specialists.

You can keep doing what you're doing now, remain open to change, and see what life brings you.

But sometimes being open isn't enough. What if life brings you nothing? You may have to make the changes happen yourself. And that's where the turmoil comes in.

Even at 55, I'm not sure what the difference is between patience and procrastination. But I do know about regretting wasted decades.

For a long, long time, worries like yours were my constant companion. I wanted it all, and couldn't pare away the nonessentials. Finally life did it for me.

I wish I'd had, when I was younger, the courage to question my deepest beliefs. Not that they were wrong . . . which was part of the problem. They were so right that I had no experience ferreting out the few which weren't.

All I can recommend is this: whatever makes you afraid or uncomfortable is what you should focus on.

It's amazingly easy to learn to live with your own contradictions. But when you find your true place, everything makes sense. It becomes one seamless, integrated piece, and life . . . flows (as opposed to being an erratic, irritating drip).

Would I re-live my life differently if I could? You bet! But, still, I'm okay with where I am . . . if only I had another 70 years.

Dramatic changes are easy. Dealing with crisis is easy. It's the day to day struggle that's hard. We dull ourselves to get through it, making our seemingly insignificant day-to-day choices . . . until one day we look back and a path is discernible.

This may sound ridiculous, but what brought it all together for me was politics. Not politics like you see on the tube or read in the paper, but comparing the world we COULD have to the world we DO have, and figuring out for myself what needs to happen to get us there.

Onward and upward, young fiery woman. Be fearless!

nice blog! and yeah that type of discussion IS annoying mostly because most people only gave very little time to think about the issues, how they necessarily (we all are on the same planet) have a connection to it etc WHILE at the same time believing that they have pretty much seen and exhausted the list of arguments to explain it all... anyway... thanks for writing about it!
